Play therapy
Moving Minds Psychology loves working with kids through play therapy. Psychology sessions can feel big and scary, so we use play therapy to build rapport and to get into a comfortable space. This then means that through play and craft, we can teach and understand different concepts and learn how to use different coping strategies.
Play comes naturally to kids, and it's how they make sense of their world, and make sense of their feelings long before they have the words to explain what it is going on. In play therapy we build on this so that kids can express themselves, and work through challenges.
Moving Minds Psychology uses a mix of non-directive (child-led, where the psychologist does not direct play) and directive play (introducing structured activities to address specific emotional or behavioural challenges). We use this approach to allow kids to explore and process different challenges, while also teaching psychology concepts that can be helpful.
Please note, some play therapists are entirely non-directed which means completely child-led. I do not find this authentic to myself as a therapist, which is why I offer a combined approach. However, this is important to know.
I enjoy the following play best!!
- Creative (craft, crochet, painting, making things, air dry clay etc)
- Sand Tray (sand tray, kinetic sand, slime tray)
- Play and Role-Play (superhero's, dress- ups, dolls, barbies, cubby house etc)
- Sensory and Movement play (obstacle courses, sensory swing, slime, fidgets)
We often draw from concepts from attachment theories, Gestalt, CBT, ACT, Sensory informed, and compassion focused.
We are neuroaffirming, which means we plan to tailor sessions to your child's interests and sensory seeking or avoiding needs. We love all brains and ways of thinking!
